Spotlight on the seller - Hart of glass

The Hart of Glass  seeks to offer a range of unique fused, slumped, recycled and stained glass giftware, jewellery and homeware at affordable prices.

Designed and made in Leeds in my home studio, I take inspiration from nature, colour,  light, textures and used objects. A large range of glass is used in my one-off pieces and each one is meticulously created with love.

All jewellery is made by firing multiple layers of the finest ‘Bullseye’ and dichroic art glass to achieve a various multi-dimensional effects.

Recycled bottles are chosen carefully for their colour, shape, texture or design which impacts on their final use. Bottles are kiln-fused flat to make cheeseboards, or slumped into shapes for dip dishes, spoon rests, candle bridges and plates.

I use special enamel paints for commission messages or patterns, for instance on a champagne bottle for an anniversary.

I also enjoy enhancing colourless and transparent glass with inclusions such as coloured ground glass (frit), wafer thin glass and copper sheet or wire.

I use this technique in my key rings, plaques, coasters and bowls. Again, this provides me with a wide scope of possible designs and products, which are always developing.

Bespoke and commission pieces are always welcome. Please email me with your design idea to thehartofglass@gmail.com

Spotlight on the Seller - Kallisto Cremes

Kallisto Creams is a small business creating handmade natural skincare products with Maria at the helm of production.

After years of using expensive high street brands to look after my skin I stumbled upon a number of articles which uncovered the hidden harmful effects of their chemical ingredients.
Considering these products were applied on the skin every day and night and approximately sixty percent of that is absorbed by the body, would you purposely cover your skin in something that you knew was actually harmful and poisonous?
Now my passion for healthy skin led me making my own products without being laden with harmful chemicals; healthy and radiant skin achieved the natural way.

Kallisto Creams is a lifestyle choice for those ethically conscious individuals who desire moisturised, protected and radiant skin but seek an alternative to the mass-produced chemically laden toiletries and cosmetics without sacrificing any luxury.
We have created remedies that nourish, hydrate and rejuvenate your skin and help maintain a youthful natural balance.

All our products are handmade and infused with the traditional benefits of herbs, fruit, vegetables and oils; skincare the way Mother Nature intended.
Our range of natural body creams and skin care products are handmade in small batches so that you will receive them at their best.
This means you receive your skincare product in the freshest possible condition and we can use the smallest amount of preservative possible.

All our products meet with the current UK and EU Cosmetics Products Regulations and have passed a Safety Assessment by an independent laboratory.

You will find all my products in The Light Leeds at the Fabrication shop which  is social enterprise which aims to provide help and development for over 40 micro craft businesses.

Thank you,

Maria Psarra-Parker

Spotlight on the seller - Glass By Lydia Haines

Seller of the Week

Glass By Lydia Haines

I am a Leeds-based kiln-formed glass artist. Much of my work is about life, energy and movement. I am passionate about life, about living it to the full. I want my audience to engage my work in the same way - to indulge their senses, to feel, touch, delight and be stimulated.

I am fascinated by the effects of light on the hues and tones of the world around me and I love to transpose the vigor found in nature into my work. Using glass as an artistic medium allows me to work with light, manipulating its reflection, refraction and transmission through texture and form.

My Symphony series is a collection of original wall art pieces and 3D objets. I transpose the rhythm of the changing seasons and light on the enchanting Yorkshire landscape – the hills and dales, moorland, rivers and shorelines – into the rhythms and patterns within my work. I work with glass as painters would with paints. I hand cut, juxtapose and layer fine strips of glass to build up texture and create depth as painters would with paints on canvas. The collage is then kiln-fired to create a symphony of light, colour and texture.

I work to private and corporate commissions, offering a broad selection of visually arresting fused glass panels, wall art pieces, objet d’art and designer jewellery.

Spotlight on the Seller: Happy Flower Art

My work is abstract and inspired by my surroundings, colour and basic pattern. I source these through meditative and visionary techniques as well as patterns seen in nature. I also use free form, almost subconscious methods. These processes produce unique pieces with a personal outlook and are often expressive of a certain energy/feeling. It is a result of my background in the Biological Sciences and Psychology as well as observations on life and how many things in nature mirror/represent the human ‘condition’. Hopefully the viewer can relate to and maybe create their own narrative around the piece relating to their own experience.

My artistic influences are visionary artists such as Bruce Rimell, modernists such as Brice Marden, and Frank Stella, Abstract Expressionists such as Mark Rothko and Op Artists such as Bridget Riley.  Also Outsider Artists such as David Shrigley.

I use acrylic paint and small brushes and/or marker pens on paper or canvas to create colourful, detailed images on A2 or smaller size but I do use other media as and when it is appropriate.

Most of my art originates from ideas from my little brain but I'm happy to work with clients on a commission basis to produce something that reflects their personality and needs too - it's always exciting to collaborate!

Seller in the Spotlight: Eclectic Chair

My name is Heather, and I am the upholsterer in Fabrication, called Eclectic Chair.

After doing a degree in French and Spanish, I spent the next 20 years working in the restaurant industry in Manchester, managing one of the best known restaurants in Manchester for 10 years until 2006. However, in the year 2000, I started an upholstery course, and I immediately got the bug for upholstery. I could see a massive potential for restoring furniture, but also I could see a creative opportunity.

Upholstery has been around forever, but it is a wonderful way to recycle. Furniture made pre 1980s, tends to be made from better quality wood, and it is only the fabric and stuffings which perish, all of which can be replaced. People don’t always realise there is no need to throw furniture away. It can be completely transformed with a little imagination.

I tend to prefer furniture from the 1950s to the 1970s, this period is known as ‘mid-century modern’, and the furniture has clean, unfussy lines, often with tapered slightly splayed legs. Because of its simplicity of design, you can really jazz it up with your fabric.

I love to juxtapose modern and antique, so either a modern chair with a vintage piece of fabric, or an antique piece of furniture with something fresh and new in terms of fabric, colour and pattern.
The best upholsterers are perfectionists, and I constantly strive to make sure that my work is of the highest quality.

When Fabrication came along, it was my dream come true! A shop where I could display my work to be seen by the people of Leeds, but which didn’t rob me of my profit. Before it I had nowhere to showcase my work. I have also benefited tremendously from the knowledge of the other designer makers with whom I work in the shop, and since it opened 6 months ago, my work has been flying out of the door, proving that there is a market for it, and giving my confidence a huge boost. Long may it continue!
