Spotlight On The Seller... Drifting DownTime

Welcome to Drifting DownTime...
Finding things, making things, starting something, never quite sure how it will end up...
I love driftwood: you see it on the beach and it makes you think. And you pick it up, dust it off, turn it this way and that; lay it out to dry for 2-3 weeks, glancing at it every now and then, studying it, watching as it changes weight, colour, even shape, sometimes.
And then…there’s a little shifting of something…..and when you put it down, it’s not back with the other pieces, but on the table, ready…
I guess it’s the mystery and unknowable backstory that draws me time and time again to the pieces of wood, china, glass, odds and ends to be found on the tide line; worn and rounded, transformed over years by sea and sand into little treasures..
If they could talk, what could they tell us?  From where have they travelled and how long did it take for them to end up where they did?
I'm a Yorkshire lass from landlocked Brighouse who's never happier than when combing through the strand line of the beaches of the glorious Yorkshire, Northumberland and Isle of Mull coast (and occasionally a little further afield!)
I’m often asked where the DownTime project began. And in truth, while it’s the journalist in me that loves a good mystery, I think, in the main, it’s because of a boy called Thomas, my little star, who spent his final days with me watching the seas and marching the windswept dunes of Bamburgh, and who now flies with the birds at Flamborough Head.

To know more about me and my boy – and about life after he left. You’ll find our story – and perhaps a little indication of why I do what I do – here: http://nicola-furbisher.blogspot.co.uk/2013/03/day-between-days.htmlhttp://nicola-furbisher.blogspot.co.uk/2013/03/day-between-days.html

Seller in the Spotlight ... Chilli Devil Sauces.

Brighton, April 1979.
A 20 year old Yorkshire Lad wanders out of the railway station into Brighton for the first time. Over the road is a kebab shop, and he's hungry.
The shop owner asks him;
“Do you want chilli sauce on that?”
“What sauce? Yeah go on, I'll try anything once”
“Have you ever had chilli sauce before?”
“No, but don't worry about it, I'll give it a go”
“I tell you what, I'll make up a special chilli sauce for you – not too spicy”

I watched as he mixed tomato puree with chilli powder, garlic and spices. When I tried the “special sauce”, it nearly blew my head off – and I loved it! I also remembered how to make it, and mixed my own chilli sauce whenever I fancied it from then on.

Kingston-upon-Hull, September 2009.
I took stock of what I had left. The burglars had known exactly what they were looking for the first time. They cherry picked all the most expensive of the cookware I sold. About £10,000 worth of it. That alone would have put the business in serious difficulty. The second time they had put it beyond doubt. Never mind that the third time they came that week we caught them red handed, the damage was irrepairable, I had to cease trading.

On the office roof my 15' x 10' greenhouse was full of ripe chilli plants. About the only good thing left in my life (apart from some very good friends, as I would soon find out). This year I wouldn't just make one sweet chilli sauce and one hot chilli sauce, I'd experiment. After all, the only other thing I had plenty of was time...

___________________________________________

I first registered with Hull City Council as a food producer in May 2010. My friends had convinced me that there was a market for my chilli sauces, and I'd been offered a one-day-a-week sub-let on a little food production unit in Arthur Street, Hull. Chilli Devil Sauces is still based there, but it's my unit now, not a sub-let anymore, and I've been working full-time at developing the business for 2 years now. Since then I've made (and sold) about 25,000 bottles of chilli sauce in 25 or 30 flavours, most of which have stood the test of time and are part of the Chilli Devil Sauces range today.

I use only the best ingredients, and absolutely no chilli extract, no artificial flavouring,  colouring or preservatives. Flavour is always the most important thing – any fool can make a hot sauce, making a tasty hot sauce calls for a little more. At one end of the scale, my Apple, Mint and Chilli sauce is so mild it's just like apple sauce with a little attitude. At (almost) the other end of the scale my Naga Challenger sauce is hotter than a raw Scotch Bonnet chilli, but has been described as “one of the best ultra-hot sauces available in the UK” (chillibugs.co.uk).

I've also made chilli sauces for other people – as wedding favours or for parties, for charities, sports teams, musicians and food outlets. The creative process is my favourite part of the job. There is a lot of pressure when you are one to one with a customer, in the kitchen, and you've already told them “just describe to me what flavour you want and I'll make it happen”. There is nowhere to hide, but the thrill of succeeding, and the look on the clients face at the end of the day, make everything worthwhile.

Spotlight on the Seller...... Sue Beardsworth

I can’t remember a time when I didn’t draw and paint and art has always been an important part of my life.

I studied Art History and Philosophy at Leeds University and spent 40 years teaching in primary schools.

As Art co-ordinator my focus was the development of children’s creativity and encouragement of their understanding and love of the visual arts.

Since retirement I am able to spent more time and energy on my own art.I have kept a sketchbook diary for many years and use these recordings in my paintings.

I investigate rhythms, colours and patterns that I see in the places I visit and the objects I observe.
Creating and sharing art gives me great enjoyment and a sense of fulfilment.

Come to le depart, depart with a souvenir made right here

The folks at Fabrication are recycling, upcycling and making bespoke items, to get ready for the biggest bike race in the world, congregating close to their shop in July
The social enterprise, which supports micro crafts businesses, is located in The Light, close to the start line, and sells work by around 70 local artists, designers and makers, making it the largest souvenir shop in the area for those wanting to take a little piece, and even a taste, of Yorkshire back with them
Alongside their usual items for sale some of the sellers have been making bike themed cushions, clothing, artwork, jewellery and homewares, as well as Yorkshire rose items
Throughout June, and on TDF day itself, they will be running bike themed craft workshops in The Light courtyard printing Victorian cycling images on bags, wooden items and decoupage, making jewellery, upcycling bike parts into other items and badge making. You can also see how you may have looked in Victorian cycling clothes by having your picture taken in their photo board
If you are planning a picnic after the event why not take advantage of their locally grown and made cordials, chocolates and chutneys, completing the hamper with picnic platters, jugs, blankets and bottle openers. If you’ve had a go at the route yourself and are aching after exerting yourself then try our post exercise bath soaks and massage oil to get yourself moving again

Spotlight on the seller - Needlecase

Jean Walne and Judith Schur are a mother and daughter team who are passionate about knitting and needlework of all kinds.  Their shop, Needlecase, where they offer a wide range of yarns and haberdashery, opened in September 2010, in the small North Yorkshire town of Tadcaster.  www.needlecase.co.uk

These unique knitting kits have been designed by Judith who is currently studying for a City and Guilds qualification in Knitted Textiles. The range of kits available is very small but Judith is hoping to make some additions throughout 2014.
All of the kits use British yarn from West Yorkshire Spinners, based in Keighley.

Chain Stripes – an Easy Knit, this cushion is designed to really show off the natural colours of the Jacob wool and it is available in 4 different ‘colour ways’, each one taking a different shade as its background colour. There are 3 coconut buttons included which complement the natural colours of the wool.

Tile Petal –in beautiful, soft Blue Faced Leicester wool, requires some experience. There are 5 colours available on a cream background.

Diamond Cable – again this cushion requires some experience. It is knitted in Jacob Aran weight wool and is available in Ecru and Light Grey which are both natural colours from the Jacob sheep. The wool from West Yorkshire Spinners is fabulous quality and beautiful to work with. The cushion is fastened with three enormous coconut buttons which I love.

Seller in the Spotlight - Woolly Buddha

Woolly Buddha was born in October 2012, after my daughter and I were disappointed by the unoriginal, mass produced knitted accessories on the high street.  Our big, bold hats, scarves and stoles are designed to be statement pieces, which we hand-knit out of premium yarns such as hand-spun British Alpaca, merino wool and hand-dyed mulberry silk, much of which is produced to our specifications.

I have a passion for puzzles and problem solving, which is why I love the design process.  I use organic shapes and take inspiration from nature and architecture, to produce unusual and versatile creations.  While the design may be key, it’s also our choice of colours, texture and sumptuous materials that attract our customers in the UK and worldwide.

Our signature piece, the Divalicious stole harks back to Hollywood’s ‘golden era’, and exudes glamour and allure.  Using one of knitwear sticks can quickly turn our Versatile scarf into a cowl or wrap, giving three looks for the price of one.  All of our pieces are designed to make the wearer feel special.  We searched for a retail outlet to market our accessories and Fabrication, with its fantastic variety of original, artisan-made products, was the ideal choice.
