Spotlight on The Seller... Just Sew Sana

Just Sew Sana is a new design venture by Sana Lindsay.

With experience of working within the luxury Fashion, Embroidery and Bridal industry, Sana’s handmade designs are quirky, colourful and fun.

Specialising in hand made bunting, headbands, aprons, bags and brooches, each hand crafted item is made in her Leeds based studio.

Sana’s inspiration stems from vintage fashion/textiles and the vivid colours found in nature. Her love of embellishment, embroidery, printed textiles and texture is reflected in all handmade items.

Having recently relocated back to Leeds after living and working in London for the last ten years, Sana is proud to return home to Yorkshire’s rich textiles heritage.

Just Sew Sana items can be made to order for special occasions.

Sana enjoys collaborating with clients to design and make bespoke items that are tailored to customer’s needs.

Just Sew Sana welcomes all commissions, big or small.

Spotlight on the Seller- Ages Of Elegance

Our first Spotlight on the Seller this year is our leader Dawn Wood, who when she's not trying to cover us all in gingham, works from her studio near the corn exchange in Leeds city centre, creating clothing as Ages Of Elegance
She trained during the last Millenium as a fashion designer, having always had a passion for clothes with the best dressed dolls around. Not just contemporary garments or from a fashion point of view, but also historical & and in it's wider socio-economic setting. Somewhere in the vaults of Huddersfield uni is a super 8 film of her talking about viking clothing aged 12 whilst a class project was being filmed.
This interest led to her moving into making costume for film and theatre, moving to London to work at two of the largest film costume houses, and the Royal Opera House before becoming freelance. She now also produces clothing for museums and collectors, specialising in military uniforms, 18thc clothing and corsetry, as well as giving costume talks. She has sent 16thc patterns in the diplomatic bag to Uzbekistan, created the 17thc bodyguard for the King of Norway, and dyed Phil Collin's underpants for the film Buster
Her move back to Yorkshire 12 years ago meant she started to produce her fashion label again alongside and she sells one off items from this in the shop as well as taking on bespoke work both fashion and bridal. She has been regularly nominated as best designer in Leeds and for her lingerie in the Leeds Retails Awards and was the featured lingerie designer in the 2006 Urban Fashion Awards
Her work is diverse and for both men and women so if you want a truly unique outfit you know where to come. She is also our main tutor and if you come for any of her classes you know you are being taught by a longstanding expert in her field

Spotlight on the seller - Geof

Geof is a Leeds-based cartoonist, comics creator and scientist. He uses the twin weapons of humour and cute stylised drawings to make light of things like alternative sexual practices, science, Victoriana/steampunk, and tea. His ongoing Fetishman series of comics have been a feature of the UK small-press scene since 2004. More recently his misleadingly-titled Steampunk Literary Review, an annual anthology of his steampunk creations, has been well received both in the UK and the US with a third issue due in the summer of 2013. His travelling museum of tea-related lies has been to events and festivals across the UK since 2010 and is still expanding.

Still here!!

If you have been following us on Facebook or Twitter you might have been a bit confused about whether the shop was staying open or not. Don't worry, so were we!!
Fabrication is currently based in The Light in Leeds. This was for a six month contract. Negotiations to stay on took us right up to the wire, we were ready to pack up and hire a van. But don't worry, Fabrication is still in business in The Light.

The outpouring of support on Twitter when it looked like we might have to close was very heartening, it really showed that Leeds has an appetite for independent retail and doesn't want to be just another clone-town. To keep us going, keep shopping with us!
You can browse some of the loveliness on offer on our facebook photostream but we's love you to pop in and say Hi! Remember, everything on sale is hand made in the UK by independent craftspeople, no sweat shops involved!

While we are in The Light for the foreseeable future, it won't be our permanent home. The Light is mostly bars and eateries, so we are still on the lookout for a central, affordable retail space. If you know of anywhere then drop us a line. In the meantime, see you at The Light!
